Areas In Richmond

philoconn:

to stay away from

best places to live

best property management companies

suggestions please

won’t you?

140 characters aren’t enough to answer this. I wish I had known more about Richmond when I bought a house here. Spilt milk, etc.

DISCLAIMER: I still don’t know too much about Richmond. This recommendation is given based on 1.5 years of experience in the area. Use at your own risk.

  • Stay away from most of the East end. There’s nothing to do and some of the neighborhoods are rough.
    • Highlights: Bill’s Barbeque
    • Lowlights: Richmond International Speedway, boredom.
  • From what I’ve seen the immediate South side of Richmond isn’t too great either. Think Portsmouth.
    • Highlights: Duckpin bowling, Legend brewery.
    • Lowlights: Looks rough.
  • North Richmond is nice. Older small family homes with character.
    • Highlights: The MacArthur neighborhood has a little shopping center in it with the best beer and wine store in the city. It’s also close to the city.
    • Lowlights: Unless you’re ready to have 2.5 kids I’m not sure what you’d do here.
  • West Richmond is like Town Center in Virginia Beach, except the people here don’t seem to get that it sucks. Great for Yuppies.
    • Highlights: Shopping, shopping, shopping!
    • Lowlights: Shopping, shopping, shopping.
  • The Fan/Museum district is pretty great. Watch which part you end up in but it’s walk-friendly and there’s tons to do.
    • Highlights: Parks, restaurants and people.
    • Lowlights: College students.
  • Downtown is, like many other downtowns, expensive to live in. Remember though that Richmond’s downtown is old and strange. You’re better off living somewhere else and working there.
    • Highlights: Stuff to do, Shockoe Bottom.
    • Lowlights: Broad street.
  • Other. You’ll hear about Chesterfield (think Chesapeake) and Mechanicsville (think Pungo) often as well. Don’t bother. If you’re going to more to Richmond, move to Richmond.

I’m sure many of you disagree with me. I hope you do, because I’d love to hear more about the fun parts of Richmond.
